A life of service. A lasting legacy.
Michael Alexander Garza served his country in the United States Air Force for 19 years and six months. He died on November 24, 2019, while serving on active duty. His life was so much more than the circumstances of his death. His commitment to service, his family, and the people who loved him are at the heart of this tribute.
Beyond the Uniform
Beyond his military service, Michael was a man of many interests and a deep love for his family. Tierra remembers him as soft-spoken, kind, exceptionally polite, and protective of the people he loved.
He loved anime and video games, fishing, coding, animals, and firearms. He was especially fascinated by science, astronomy, and space. These were the things that made Michael who he was beyond his uniform, and he is deeply missed.
Why Camp Rise Again Exists
After losing Michael, his wife Tierra Schofield faced profound grief and learned firsthand how much it matters to have people who listen without judgment. She founded Camp Rise Again in his honor to create opportunities for adults experiencing depression, grief, or isolation to step outside their everyday environments, share meaningful experiences, and form genuine friendships.
Michael’s Legacy
Michael's memory is woven into the purpose of Camp Rise Again. Through outdoor adventures, open conversations, and supportive connection, Tierra hopes each participant leaves knowing their life matters and they do not have to walk through the darkness alone. Camp Rise Again is peer-support based, offering community, shared experiences, and encouragement. It does not provide clinical mental-health treatment or replace professional counseling, medical care, or crisis services.
